You take the car theory exam at the CBR in Dutch or in English. Want another language, more time or more calm? Then you choose a different exam format. Here you read which formats there are and how to arrange them.
Which exam formats are there?
The standard theory exam is available in Dutch and in English. You then have 30 minutes. The English exam can contain a few Dutch words, such as the name of a road or a sign.
Want another language, more time or more calm? Then there are three other formats. With all three you have 45 minutes.
Which format suits you?
Exam with an interpreter
For a language other than Dutch or English. An exam in another language is only possible with an interpreter present.
How it works
You sit in a separate room with a CBR employee and your interpreter. The employee reads out the questions and answers. The interpreter translates them. You enter the answers on the screen yourself.
Arranging your interpreter
You arrange and pay for the interpreter yourself. Interpreting agencies are not part of the CBR. The CBR does have a list of interpreting agencies it has agreements with on price and quality. Book your interpreter at least 14 days before your exam.
Exam with extra time
This exam is for when you need more time, for example because of dyslexia or another condition. You get 15 extra minutes.
Having questions read out
A computer voice can read the questions out. You get headphones for this. With the buttons at the bottom of the screen you play a question.
Surcharge back with dyslexia
You don't need to send anything in advance. Do you have a dyslexia statement? Then you claim the surcharge back with the CBR form. Do this within 14 days after your exam.
Individually supervised exam
You sit alone in a room with a CBR employee. This is possible for example with exam anxiety or autism, or if sitting the exam in the hall doesn't work for another reason.
How it works
The employee reads out the questions and answers. You enter the answers yourself. The employee explains how the exam works, but not what a question means. Nothing is translated either.
Deaf or hard of hearing
Then you take this exam with a registered sign language interpreter. You book that interpreter yourself, at least 14 days in advance. You also pay the agency yourself.
Booking and costs
You book every format in Mijn CBR with your DigiD. You can also authorise a theory centre to do it for you.
An exam in English, with an interpreter, with extra time or individually supervised costs more than the standard exam. An interpreter comes on top of that. What each format costs right now is listed in the CBR's current fees.
